Opening of the Fastnet Area Beekeepers Association Apiary

Amidst the lush greenery of Lowertown outside Schull, West Cork, the Fastnet Area Beekeepers Association proudly inaugurated their new apiary on Saturday 22 July 2023. The event was graced by Irish biologist, environmental consultant, radio and television presenter, author and educator Éanna ni Lamhna, who cut the ribbon in style surrounded by members of the association and their families. Representatives from Birdwatch Ireland and the Native Irish Honey Bee Society were also present at the official opening of the Apiary.

The newly established apiary is the result of the tireless work of Michael and Mairead Love, the committee of the association, and the many members who helped make it happen. The beautiful land where the apiary is located was very kindly made available by the Hunt family, who were also present and received a special mention at the opening. The apiary will be designated a breeding apiary for the Native Irish Black Honeybee, and it is hoped that a conservation area can be created surrounding the apiary, with neighbouring beekeepers committing to keeping the Native Irish Bee, so that the conservation and breeding efforts will be successful. The Native Irish Honey Bee Society’s representative, John Greenaway, highlighted the significance of protecting and propagating native bee populations, fostering a sense of unity in the conservation efforts.

Safeguarding Biodiversity

With the support of these dedicated groups, it is hoped that this collective action can safeguard biodiversity in the area, not just for the Native Irish honeybee, but for the flora and fauna in the area too. The representative for Birdwatch Ireland jokingly said that more bees in the area would be a very welcome addition to the birds’ diet! The Fastnet Area Beekeepers Association’s apiary is now more than just a home for bees; it symbolizes the harmonious coexistence of humans, wildlife, and nature, inspiring others to join the cause and create a thriving environment for generations to come.

As a proud member of Fastnet Area Beekeepers Association, I was delighted to attend the event, and to get the opportunity to meet Éanna ni Lamhna, who’s work I have been admiring for many years. She is such a magnificent voice for biodiversity and a great role model for so many of us and it was an honour to present a gift of honey and propolis to her on behalf of the association.
