Homemade Apple Sauce – Perfect for Windfalls

There’s nothing quite like the sweet aroma of freshly baked apples wafting through your kitchen. This homemade apple sauce recipe brings together the cozy flavors of ripe apples, a touch of sugar or honey, and a hint of cinnamon to create a versatile and delicious treat. INGREDIENTS

  • 2-3 kilos of apples (windfalls or your favorite variety)
  • A few spoonfuls of sugar (adjust to your taste)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 200 ml water (more if needed)
  • Optional: preservative (if desired)

HOW TO MAKE APPLE SAUCE

  • Begin by rinsing the apples thoroughly. Windfalls are an excellent choice for this recipe, as they’re naturally sweet and lend a rustic touch to the apple sauce. Once washed, quarter the apples, removing the cores and any damaged parts.
  • Preheat your oven to 150 degrees Celsius (approximately 300 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Place the quartered apples into an ovenproof dish. Add a single cinnamon stick to infuse the sauce with warm, comforting flavors.
  • Pour 200 ml water into the dish, making sure the liquid reaches about halfway up the apples. This will help the apples cook and soften while releasing their natural juices.
  • Cover the dish with a lid, ensuring it’s tightly sealed. Place the dish into the preheated oven and let the apples cook for about an hour.
  • Remember to stir the apples gently 30 minutes into the cooking time to promote even cooking and prevent sticking. Also check the consistency of the apples and the liquid. If needed, add a bit more water to prevent the apples from drying out. The apples should become tender and release their juices as they cook.
  • Once the apples are soft and thoroughly cooked, remove the dish from the oven. Carefully remove the cinnamon stick. Pass the apple mixture through a sieve to separate the smooth sauce from any seeds, cores, and peels. This step ensures a silky texture for your sauce.
  • Transfer the sieved apple sauce to a saucepan. Taste the sauce and adjust the sweetness by adding more sugar if desired. Gently heat the sauce while stirring to dissolve the sugar completely.
  • If you plan to store your apple sauce for an extended period, you can add a preservative at this point. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the appropriate amount.
  • Carefully pour the warm apple sauce into clean, warmed jars. While still hot, tighten the jar lids, and allow them to cool. This step helps create a seal for preservation.
  • Once cooled, your homemade cinnamon apple sauce is ready to enjoy! It can be stored in the refrigerator for a few weeks or frozen for longer shelf life.
