Earth Day Sustainability Event Kinsale

Sustainability is not all about gloomy news and top-down approaches. It’s got so much to do with positive choices and community spirit. This was highlighted in a great event organised by Kinsale Chamber to mark Earth Day & highlight sustainability. The guest speakers were Madeleine Murray and Dr Tara Shine, founders of Change by Degrees. Also speaking at the event was the leader of the Social Democrats, Holly Cairns TD.

It was very empowering to be in the company of these strong, inspirational women who are so focused on creating positive change for us all!

Emerging themes from the event included the power of emotive narratives. The need for community push to spur government on to more urgent climate action and the recognition that sustainability means different things to different people.

I’d be hung, drawn and quartered by my beekeeping peers if I did not mention the importance of pollinators and biodiversity in this context. Hence, I drew the attention to the inadequate enforcement of the Hedge Cutting Ban. And also to the lack of governmental supports for Beekeepers and beekeeping. I also mentioned the Tidy Towns movement and how successful they have been at creating awareness about our pollinators!
